System tray full of IM programs?
Posted by Clarke M on 03 April 2006 08:36 PM
IM clients take up system resources and RAM while running. When you start communicating with many different people, often you will have to run three or four clients at the same time (for example, ICQ, Yahoo!, AIM, MSN) and this can bog down the computer, not to mention make an ugly mess on your screen when you have a few simultaneous conversations going.

There are several programs out there which take the place of all your chat clients. This saves on system resources, and it also allows you to have contacts from different IM programs all in one list! You will only need to run one program to talk to your friends on ICQ, Yahoo, AIM, IRC, MSN, and some of the lesser-known chat programs.

Personally, I prefer Trillian. It's free, and very customizable.

Other free clients include:

Ayttm: http://ayttm.sourceforge.net/

Happy chatting!
