Keep Your Children Safe on the Internet

The internet is a great tool, but it is accessible to anyone, and it is not policed. It is up to the parents to make sure that their children are not at risk of being exposed to things that are not appropriate for them.

Here are some tips that you, as a parent, can follow to help ensure that you know what your child is as safe as possible.

1. Talk with your children about the types of sites that are and are not appropriate.

2. Ensure that the computer is in an area where you can see what your child is doing at any given time.

3. Keep a close eye on the chat rooms your child uses. Most chat rooms are unmoderated, and anything can be said. Encourage the use of moderated chat rooms made especially for children.

4. Discuss your children's online friends with them. Ask them to let you know if there ever comes a time that they would like to meet someone in person who they met online.

5. Tell your children that under no circumstances are they to give out any personal information, including where they live, their last name, phone number, etc. Explain to them how dangerous this can be.

6. Instruct your children to never click on pop-ups or to download anything without your consent. Explain to them the dangers of viruses and spyware, and that certain programs can allow an outsider to gain access to the computer to cause damage and obtain personal information.

7. Make sure that your children know to never give out financial information such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers, etc. - even if they receive an email that looks official. This kind of thing should always be handled by the parent.

8. Designate time slots in which your children may use the internet for entertainment as opposed to homework. This will ensure that you will not have to watch them 24/7, they won't develop an internet addiction, and it will encourage them to continue with other activities in "real life".
