Windows XP and 2000: Password Security

We receive many a call here, pertaining to a certain feature found in Windows XP (Professional and Home Edition) and Windows 2000. That feature is that these Operating Systems will add a number or 'dots' or 'stars' to the password field. Rest assured, your password is still the same number of characters as you entered in.

The reason this is done is that when a person walks by your monitor, they will not be able to guess the number of characters in your password.
